Meet Eric Nelson

Eric Nelson was born and raised in Kanawha County.  During summers from grade school through college, he worked on a farm in Greenbrier County. That’s where he learned the value of hard work. He also found something much more important, his wife, Pam, married now for 39 years.

Eric and Pam have three children, Heather, Tripp and Sydney who have all attended Kanawha County public schools.  Eric is running for re-election to the West Virginia State Senate to continue promoting expanded opportunities for our youth to stay home here in West Virginia and to also create a competitive business environment where people want to move.

Eric and his family are members of First Presbyterian Church in Charleston where he served as an Elder and President of the Trustees as well as a former volunteer church basketball and junior high golf team coach. Other community services include board positions on the Clay Center, the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center, and the West Virginia Economic Development Authority.  Eric also serves as a Board member of Wesbanco Bank, West Virginia’s largest headquartered publicly traded financial institution.

Eric graduated from George Washington High School, where he co-captained both the track and basketball teams his senior year.  He attended and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and Accounting from Washington & Lee University. He served as class president his Junior and Senior years and was a 4-year letterman on the track team where he was selected as co-captain his senior year.

Eric is a successful business leader who has the experience we need to grow our state’s economy. He is currently President of Nelson Enterprises, Inc., a diversified investment company focusing on real estate, natural resources, money management and entrepreneurial activity in the Appalachian region.  Previously, Eric was a co-founding General Partner of Mountaineer Capital, LP; a venture capital/private equity firm; Treasurer of City Holding Company; and was a Director in the Investment Banking Division of SunTrust Bank (Truist) in Richmond, Virginia.

Eric was elected to the West Virginia Senate in 2020 representing the 17th district that incorporates the majority of Kanawha County and the capital city, Charleston.   He is a member of the finance, energy, banking & insurance, economic development, flood, and workforce committees.  He chairs the Senate Pension Committee.  Previously, he represented a majority of Kanawha County in the WV House of Delegates from 2011 – 2020 where he served as chairman of the House Finance Committee from 2015-2018.

During his legislative service, Eric’s significant achievements included playing a pivotal role in structuring the largest tax cut in state history including lowering personal income taxes, expanding historic tax credits, and reducing taxation on social security and veteran retirement benefits. He played a substantial role in providing new funding for infrastructure and high-speed broadband as well as contributed to education reform that benefited educators, empowered families with more educational choices, and also created additional support for early childhood development.  Senator Nelson promotes healthcare advancements for West Virginians that include lower prescription drug costs and enhanced access to hospital and physician care.
